Offham Villlage

Description

Offham village green Quintain.

This Quintain is reported to be the last English Quintain in its original position in the UK.

The idea of a Quintain is that a rider on horseback would strike the flat end of the Quintain with his lance and then ride away at speed before the weighted end swung around and hit them on the back of the head.

The Romans use to practice their skill at charging at the Quintain (or tilting post) with a lance, hitting the broad part of the cross-bar and dodging out of the way before the other end with its heavy weight hit them on the back of the head.
